MONITORING

We are providing an update on yesterday’s email issue affecting messages sent from outside the district. This was a global Microsoft outage that impacted many organizations, not just Westminster School District. The issue occurred when Microsoft’s email system was unable to accept incoming messages for several hours. What this means: • Some external emails sent between late morning and early evening on January 22 may have been delayed • Some external emails sent during that time may not have been delivered and may need to be resent by the sender Microsoft has confirmed the issue is mostly resolved, though they continue to monitor for any remaining delivery problems. We are actively working with both Microsoft and our email security provider to confirm message handling and recovery. As a point of emphasis, this issue was entirely on Microsoft’s side and was not caused by any district systems or changes. Outlook 365 remains in a degraded state and WSD ITS is monitoring the situation. Mail is flowing at this time. We will provide updates as they become available.

IDENTIFIED

The issue with degraded performance relating to Microsoft 365 services and Microsoft Outlook persist. Users are not currently able to receive mail from external senders. Users may also have issues accessing files in OneDrive and utilizing Microsoft Teams. Microsoft reports that their infrastructure in North America is not processing traffic as expected, which is the root cause of the issue. They are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible but at this time there is no estimated time to restoration. WSD ITS continues to monitor the situation and will update as more information becomes available.

INVESTIGATING

WSD ITS is monitoring a situation with Microsoft Services that is impacting the delivery of email from users outside of the district. Microsoft is reporting an incident in their cloud and they are working towards a resolution. WSD ITS will monitor and update as more information becomes available.
